| Celluloid
or now more commonly, celluloid, was/is a
thermoplastic invented in 1869 by the United States chemist John
Weslet Hyatt.
It combined cellulose
(C6H10O5) which is pretty much
cotton with nitrate and camphor (C10H16O).
Although it is dangerously flamable, it was used for many common
item such as combs and the collars and cuffs for blouses and
shirts.
It was the first material used to make film, but it was
not very satisfactory.
