Atget, Eugene (1857-1927) was a talented, creative and innovative French photographer remembered mostly for his thousands of pictures of Paris streets and shops with reflections playing on their windows. He went largely unrecognized and unappreciated during his lifetime. He started taking what have come to be called documentary pictures in 1898 and is said to have made over 10,000 photos, many of which were rescued and preserved after his death by Berenice Abbott. Some of his most interesting work was his 1921 series depicting the bordellos and whorehouses of Paris which had almost as many as Philadelphia. Saddly, Atget went insane, perhaps from syphilis. Estimated basic value: $2200
