American Film was the photographic negative stock introduced in 1888 by George Eastman (1854-1932).
Instead of a plate, the film was in an innovative roll allowing the user to take numerous pictures before processing. It truly revolutionized photography, making it an amateur's hobby. At first the sensitive emulsion was on a paper backing which was removed to glass when processed. In 1889 the process was greatly simplified when the emulsion was put directly on a transparent film of nitrocellulose. With a few improvements, it was the basic system used for the next 110 years.
