| The album
as a book for displaying and saving keepsakes has been around
since the seventeenth century. By 1850 it had been adapted to
displaying photographs. Many albums, especially early ones, were
plush and elegant. They were far more than simply scrapbooks.
Early albums were usually bound in leather or fine cloth. Over
time they have deteriorated and become soiled. They are still
sought after, especially those of the Civil War period.
