aerial photography is the art of taking pictures from the air. It may seem that the practice would be a modern development. Actually, the first aerial photos were made when photography was still in its infancy. The famous photographer Nadar (1820-1904) made daguerreotypes from a balloon in 1850. By the time of World War One (1917), it was common for photos to be taken both from balloons and airplanes. The photos were generally used for mapping and reconnaissance. Peaceful uses of aerial photography include surveying and planing. Early aerial photographs are rare and costly. Later ones have far less value.

Aerial cameras take strips of film which moves in sync with the plane's motion. It is usually equipped with a powerful lens to make close-up images. Estimated basic value: $300
