Abbott, Berenice (1898-1991) was a well respected Ohio photographer, archivist and sculptor who first became known because she rescued and preserved the work of the French master, Eugene Atget in 1927. She studied sculpture until 1921 before going to Paris. There she worked with Man Ray and in 1925 started doing portraits of artists and other notables. In 1929 she relocated to New York City. From 1935 through 1939 she took photographs for the Federal Art Project of the WPA which include some of her best work.
During the 1940s ad 50s she took scientific photos and later in life she made many studies along US Route 1 from Maine to Florida.
