291 was the popular and common name applied to a famed photo gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York City. It was opened by the renown Photo-Secession group in 1902 and operated until 1917 when America entered World War One. Besides displaying the photos of Alfred Stieglitz and other masters, the gallery introduced modern and abstract art to Americas long before the revolutionary Armory Show. It was the first in America to show Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), John Marin (1870-1953), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and others. In 1912 the gallery displayed a ground breaking exhibit of children's drawings. Estimated basic value: None
